Homelessness in Houston and Harris County
Please join us for a discussion on the homeless with Ty Kekoa, Director of Constituent Services for District H; Sgt. Clayton Graham (or a member of his team) of the Heights Squad, Houston Police Department; Francisco Castillo, Housing and Homelessness Policy Advisor for Harris County Precinct 2; Harris County Sheriff's Deputy Tommy Berry, assigned to Precinct 2 for homelessness issues.
The meeting will begin with a brief update from our Texas State Senator Carol Alvarado, Senate District 6.
The neighborhood is interested in:
understanding exactly what laws/ordinances are in effect for the city, HPARD, county, and flood control district for homeless people and where they can be and what they may do;
how does enforcement vary between private and public property, as well as HPARD parks, Harris County Flood Control property, TXDoT underpasses and ROW;
what can we advocate for to better enable enforcement? e.g. posting No Trespassing signs; who posts? Or, different landscaping?
we have always had some homeless folks in the neighborhood, but we feel that there is an uptick in the numbers. What may be contributing to this?
what is the best way for us to interact with the layers of agencies/municipalities/districts that deal with the homeless to protect general public safely in our neighborhood?
what should we advocate for, and to whom, to provide solutions to homelessness?
